Sport, Outdoors & Adventure.

For nurses moving from the UK, the sheer scale of what is accessible from Sydney comes as a genuine surprise. Two hours west of the city, the Blue Mountains offer world-class hiking and spectacular scenery.

Life in NSW

More on your doorstep than you might expect.

The Hunter Valley is an easy day trip. Skiing at Thredbo and Perisher is a few hours’ drive south. The scale of what is within reach during a working stay in NSW is one of the things that most surprises nurses arriving from the UK.

Water sport and surf culture.

Surfing is part of Sydney’s culture in a way that has no real equivalent in the UK. Learn-to-surf lessons are available at most major beaches and are enormously popular with nurses arriving from the UK. Kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and open-water swimming are all accessible from the city.

Hiking and the great outdoors.

The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk is one of Sydney’s most popular routes — straightforward, spectacular, and free. The Blue Mountains National Park offers everything from short cliff-top walks to multi-day bush treks. Many nurses use their days off to explore parts of NSW that most tourists never reach.

Sport in Sydney.

Rugby league, cricket, and AFL are central to Sydney’s sporting culture. The SCG and Accor Stadium host international sport year-round. Many nurses become fans of the local rugby league teams over the course of their stay — it is a good way to connect with Australian colleagues.
