Pay element How it works in Australia
Base salary Set by the Nurses Award classification level or Enterprise Agreement applicable to the facility. Generally higher than UK equivalents at most levels.
Penalty rates Boost Additional pay applies for evening, night, weekend, and public holiday shifts. These can significantly increase your weekly earnings compared to standard day shifts.
Casual loading Agency Agency and casual nurses typically receive a loading on top of the base rate to account for the absence of leave entitlements.
Superannuation 12% Your employer contributes 12% of your earnings into a superannuation fund on top of your salary — not deducted from it. You can claim this back when you permanently leave Australia, subject to tax at withdrawal.
Annual pay review Award rates are reviewed each year. Your rate is updated accordingly.

🧾 Tax as a Working Holiday Maker.

As a subclass 417 Working Holiday Visa holder, you are classified as a Working Holiday Maker for tax purposes. This means you pay a flat rate of 15% tax on your first AUD $45,000 of earnings, with no tax-free threshold. Tax is deducted from your very first dollar.

Apply for your Tax File Number in your first week. Applying for a TFN is straightforward and takes minutes online at ato.gov.au. Without one, your employer is legally required to deduct 47% of your wages. This is one of the most important practical steps when you arrive.

🏥 Medicare — what you are entitled to.

UK citizens can access Medicare in Australia through the reciprocal healthcare agreement between the UK and Australia. This covers medically necessary treatment in public hospitals and some GP services at no cost.

The agreement does not cover everything — dental, optical, ambulance, and private hospital treatment are generally not included. Private health insurance is strongly recommended for the duration of your stay, and the cost is modest compared to what it covers.

However, it is not a full replacement for private health insurance — we recommend arranging cover before you arrive.

🏦 Superannuation — Australia’s pension system.

Superannuation is Australia’s compulsory employer pension contribution — currently 12% of your earnings — paid on top of your salary, not deducted from it. On a nursing salary, this adds up to a meaningful amount over a 12-month stay.

When you permanently leave Australia, you can claim your superannuation back through the Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP) process, though it is taxed at the point of withdrawal. We can point you to the right resources when the time comes.
